The narrator closes the structural loop with a wink to his own craft: 'onde a deixámos no capitulo antecedente' — where we left her in the preceding chapter. Chapter VIII, which stepped back in time to explain the household, now rejoins Chapter VII's ending, where Isaura sat demoted at the spinning-wheel and Leôncio came to corner her. The 'flashback' of this chapter has caught up with the story's present, and the two threads are one again.
