Portanto durante a sua reclusão em vez de entregar-se á dor que lhe deveria causar tão sensivel golpe,

The narrator underscores the perversion of the natural order: 'em vez de entregar-se á dor,' instead of surrendering to grief — the thing a son should feel — Leôncio does the opposite. The subjunctive 'deveria causar,' ought to have caused, marks the gap between the feeling owed and the feeling had. What fills the space where grief should be, the next lines reveal.
