His whole grief-time is spent on calculation — 'meditava os meios de safar-se,' pondering the means of slipping out. 'Safar-se' is a slangy, undignified verb, to wriggle or sneak free, and Guimarães chooses it deliberately: there is nothing noble in Leôncio's thinking, only the low cunning of a man looking for the exit from a trap of his own making.
