There remained to the young man no means of extricating himself decently from so many difficulties save by freeing Isaura.
The narrator states the honest solution plainly: there was no way out 'decentemente,' with decency, honour intact, 'senão libertando Isaura,' except by freeing her. The word 'decentemente' is the hinge — an honest man would take the only decent road. The next sentence tells us Leôncio will not, and so measures the exact distance between him and decency.
