The single sentence that dooms Isaura. 'Não podia se conformar,' he could not resign himself, to the one decent course. Everything — law, promise, his mother's wish, his wife's demand, the father's money — pressed toward freedom, and against all of it stood only his desire. That the desire wins is the whole tragedy: in this world, a master's want outweighs every right the powerless can muster.
