Cold excuses, black despair

As frias desculpas e futeis evasivas do marido vierão submergil-a de chofre no mais amargo e profundo desalento.
Her husband's cold excuses and futile evasions came to plunge her all at once into the most bitter and profound despair.
Reality answers hope, and the contrast is total. Against her dream of repentance stand only 'frias desculpas e futeis evasivas,' cold excuses and hollow evasions — the inventory, the trip to Court, 'we have time.' They 'submergil-a de chofre,' plunge her abruptly, in a single moment, into 'o mais amargo e profundo desalento,' the deepest despair. The castle is down; the illusion is over; and Malvina begins the descent that will end in her leaving.
