The last twist of the knife: Leôncio insinuates the ransom money was not even earned but begged — 'esmolas que lhe fizerão,' alms given him out of pity — and adds that this 'me parece mais certo,' seems to him more likely. The slander costs him nothing and demeans Miguel utterly, painting the father's heroic effort as a beggar's lucky haul. It is contempt dressed as shrewd suspicion.
