A note on this passage

Malvina answers dissimulation with dissimulation: she 'fingio-se satisfeita,' pretended to be satisfied, and left masking her 'agastamento,' her vexation. It is dignity and self-protection at once — she will not give him the satisfaction of her visible anger. But the concealment cannot hold, and the narrator has already told us so.
