The setting

A note on this passage

The pretence of satisfaction is unsustainable because the situation itself is 'tão humilhante' — so humiliating: a wife reduced to petitioning her own husband for a decency he flatly withholds. Her humiliation is not that he refuses, but that she must keep asking. Dignity forces the matter back open.
