during which it seems they gave a truce to their mutual tiffs and spites.
Death imposes a pause on the marriage's war. 'Derão tregoas aos arrufos,' they gave a truce to their tiffs — the language of a ceasefire between combatants. The narrator's 'parece,' it seems, keeps a careful distance: the peace is only apparent, a decorum owed to the dead, not a reconciliation. The 'despeitos reciprocos,' the mutual grudges, are merely suspended.
