The break is physical now: she leaves 'precipitadamente,' headlong, with her brother Henrique as escort, bound for the imperial capital — the city the novel elsewhere calls simply 'a côrte.' Henrique's presence closes a loop: the brother who first exposed Leôncio now carries his sister to safety. The great house, so proudly drawn in Chapter I, empties of its mistress.
