Nada mais tenho a dizer-te; deixo-te livre ainda, e fica-te o resto do dia para reflectires. Tens de escolher entre o meo amor e o meo odio.
I have nothing more to say to you; I leave you free still, and the rest of the day is yours to reflect. You must choose between my love and my hatred.
The ultimatum is built on a false gift: 'deixo-te livre ainda' — I leave you free still. The freedom is a stopwatch; she has until nightfall, and then the shackles. And the choice he frames — 'entre o meo amor e o meo odio', between my love and my hatred — is no choice at all, because in Leôncio's mouth the two are the same appetite wearing different faces. His 'love' is possession; his 'hatred' is possession refused and avenged. Either way she is his object. Isaura's answer will be to refuse the frame entirely: she chooses a third thing, flight, that he has not offered and cannot imagine.
