His parting boast — his love and his hatred are both 'violentos e poderosos' — is meant to leave her cornered by two forces, and it is his last blindness. He can imagine only the two exits he controls; he cannot conceive that a slave, given 'the rest of the day' to reflect, might use it to escape rather than to submit. 'Adeos!' he says, certain of finding her softened or shackled by nightfall. It is the pivot of the whole chapter: he walks out believing the room is a trap with two doors, and leaves her alone in it long enough for a third to open. Miguel's quiet footsteps are already coming.
