Miguel recoils from the knife exactly as a father must — 'que louco pensamento é o teo?' — naming her intent a madness. The word 'louco' has echoed through the chapter: Leôncio called her resolve mad to belittle it; her father calls it mad to stop it. The same word, two opposite loves. But where Leôncio's dismissal was contempt, Miguel's is terror for his child, and it is the hinge on which the scene turns from despair to rescue. He will not hand her the knife because he has brought something better, and his horrified question is the last beat before he says so.
