Two ways out of the yard

Tu sahirás primeiro e irás lá ter por dentro do quintal; eu sahirei por fora alguns instantes depois e lá nos encontraremos.
You will go out first and make your way there through the yard; I will go out by the outside a few moments later, and there we will meet.
Miguel's plan is careful to the point of pathos: they will leave separately, she 'por dentro' and he 'por fora', by different routes, so that no watcher sees a slave and a free old man depart together and guess. The two paths converging at the boat are the whole logic of a fugitive's caution, worked out by a father who has clearly rehearsed each step in his mind. There is love in the precision — every clause is a hazard anticipated and dodged. Guimarães grounds the melodrama in method; the escape will succeed not by miracle but by an old man's patient planning, the 'já preveni tudo' made concrete in staggered exits and a fixed meeting-place.
