A ship at Campos

Em menos de uma hora estaremos em Campos, onde nos espera um navio, de que é capitão um amigo meo, e que tem de seguir viagem para o norte nesta madrugada.
In less than an hour we will be at Campos, where a ship awaits us, whose captain is a friend of mine, and which is to sail north this very dawn.
The plan's full shape appears: a boat down the river to Campos, and there a ship, captained by a friend, sailing 'para o norte nesta madrugada', north this very dawn. The geography is real — Campos dos Goytacazes, the port at the mouth of the Paraíba — and the northward passage will carry Isaura toward the provinces of the coming novel. Guimarães sets the whole engine of pursuit and flight in motion in one sentence: a deadline (this dawn), a destination (the north), a helper (the captain-friend). The reader who has endured the chapter's cruelty is handed, at last, a horizon. The 'madrugada' — the dark hour before daybreak, the traditional hour of escapes — is when the door will close behind her.
