The setting

Wandering here and there about the whole house, like one giving orders to reorganize the domestic service, which from then on would run entirely under his charge,

A note on this passage

The verb 'vagando,' wandering, restless — the same word used of the distraught Isaura in Chapter VIII — now marks Leôncio's prowling. He drapes his hunt in administrative business, pretending to 'reformar o serviço domestico,' reorganize the household, now that it runs 'por sua conta,' under his sole authority. The death of his father has made him absolute master of the house, and he uses that power first of all to isolate his prey.
