A note on this passage

Beneath the show of management, one thing occupies him: 'espreitar todos os movimentos de Isaura,' to spy on her every movement. 'Espreitar' is the verb of the stalker in ambush, watching for the gap. The hawk-and-hare image of Chapter VIII continues unbroken; the predator has narrowed the whole household down to the tracking of a single quarry.
