Isaura's defence is selfless to the point of heartbreak: she pleads not her own cause but Malvina's — 'lembre-se da senhora D. Malvina,' remember the lady, so beautiful, so good, who 'tanto lhe quer bem,' loves you so. She holds up the wronged wife as the true claim on his honour. It is doubly poignant: Isaura defends the very woman whom Rosa has turned against her, returning love for the estrangement of Chapter VIII.
