Against his patient manipulation Isaura answers with a single, absolute word: 'Nunca!' — Never. It is the first time in the exchange she abandons deference entirely; the humble 'senhor' gives way to a flat refusal that admits no negotiation. The exclamation marks the pivot of the scene from plea to defiance, and it is the same steadfastness that will carry her, in this chapter, out the door and onto the river.
