The reinterpretation completes: the mother kept Isaura enslaved, he claims, only 'para conservar-te sempre junto de si,' to keep her always at her side. Possession is repainted as tenderness, captivity as closeness. It is precisely the logic the whole novel exists to refute — that love can justify owning another person — and Leôncio advances it in perfect sincerity, because to him it is self-evident. The reader hears, underneath, the ideology of slavery defending itself in the language of affection.
