The reinterpretation pays off in the argument Leôncio has been building toward: if his mother kept Isaura out of love, how can he 'largar-te de mão,' let her slip from his hand? He makes his refusal to free her the natural heir of his mother's affection. The image 'de mão,' from the hand, quietly restores the grip — the loving mother's keeping and the predatory son's holding become, in his logic, the same gesture.
