My father, — God forgive him, — driven by a sordid avarice, wanted to sell your freedom for a handful of gold,
Leôncio now rewrites the history to flatter himself. His father's agreement to free Isaura for ten contos — a father's mercy, from the son's side — becomes 'sordida avareza,' sordid greed, selling her 'por um punhado de ouro.' The piety 'Deos lhe perdoe,' God forgive him, is pure hypocrisy over the grave. He blackens the dead man precisely to set up his own claim as the higher, purer love — the manipulator's habit of lowering everyone around him.
