Your least caprice

Tuas ordens, quaesquer que sejão, os teos menores caprichos serão ponctualmente cumpridos;
Your orders, whatever they be, your smallest caprices will be punctually fulfilled;
Leôncio promises obedience — his, to her every whim: 'os teos menores caprichos serão ponctualmente cumpridos.' It sounds like servitude offered in exchange, and that is the trick of it. He would make himself her servant in trifles precisely so that she remains his in the one thing that matters. The vocabulary of caprice — passing, weightless wants — measures how little he understands her: what Isaura wants is not a caprice but her life, and that is the single order this house will never fill.
