Good!... everything goes wonderfully! murmured Leôncio with satisfaction;
Leôncio's gloating comes in an idiom of easy pleasure — 'vae tudo ás mil maravilhas!,' everything's going marvellously — murmured 'com satisfação.' He believes fortune is arranging Isaura's isolation for him. The self-congratulation is the setup for the chapter's reversal: the reader hears smugness where doom is gathering, and every 'marvel' he counts is a step toward the empty room he will find.
