at that moment there passed through his mind the happy idea of ordering an overseer to take the other slave-women to the coffee-field,
The 'feliz lembrança,' the happy thought, is to clear the last witnesses: send the other women off to the 'cafesal,' the coffee-field. The detail grounds the melodrama in the real machinery of the Vale do Paraíba slave economy — the coffee groves where captive labour was worked hardest. Leôncio bends that machinery to a private end, using the day's labour as cover to strip the house of everyone but his quarry.
