The setting

Sir! cried the pageboy from afar, and an instant later stood in Leôncio's presence.

A note on this passage

The whistle is obeyed instantly — 'um instante depois estava em presença de Leôncio.' André's promptness is not eagerness but training; on the estate a summons is answered before it can be repeated. The pageboy is about to be made the reluctant hand of his master's cruelty, and the speed of his arrival measures how completely the household runs on command. Between the whistle and the shackles there is not a second's slack. The machinery Guimarães sketched with the whip-handle now shows its human parts.
