Neste momento chega André trazendo o tronco e as algemas, que deposita sobre um banco, e retira-se imediatamente.
At that moment André arrives bringing the stocks and the shackles, which he sets down on a bench, and withdraws at once.
The narration slips into the present tense — 'chega... deposita... retira-se' — and the shift is not accidental. For the length of this one sentence the reader stands in the room as the iron comes in, watching it happen now. André sets the instruments down and leaves 'imediatamente', as fast as he can, unwilling to be near them a moment longer than his errand requires. The pageboy's haste is the last human comment before Isaura's collapse; even the hands that carry the shackles flinch from them. The bench, an ordinary piece of the workroom where she spins, now holds the tools of her torture.
