Now, trembling at the fright his mistress might suffer, he had destroyed in an instant that deed of heroism, without uttering a word to reveal it. It was enough that he himself knew what he had done, and what all must never know; enough that his soul should feel the pride of the noble devotion that spread in the smile of his lips.
