But all her efforts had been in vain; the nobleman, in his loyalty and chivalry, valued Peri's character and saw in him — savage though he was — a man of noble feelings and great soul. As a family man he esteemed the índio for the circumstance already alluded to: that he had saved his daughter, a circumstance to be explained later.
