O carmelita teve uma vertigem; lembrou-se da cena da tarde, do tremendo castigo que ele próprio havia evocado na sua hipocrisia, e se realizara tão prontamente. Mas o deslumbramento passou; estremecendo ainda e pálido de terror, o réprobo levantou o braço como desafiando a cólera do céu, e soltou uma blasfêmia horrível:
The Carmelite had a fit of vertigo; he recalled the scene of that afternoon, the tremendous punishment he himself had invoked in his hypocrisy, and which had come to pass so promptly. But the daze passed; still trembling and pale with terror, the reprobate raised his arm as if defying the wrath of heaven, and hurled out a horrible blasphemy:
