The scar in the earth

The setting

A broad track running down from the height to the spot where Cecília had lain reclined showed the line the stone had traced in passing, tearing up the grass and gashing the ground. D. Antônio, still pale and trembling from the danger Cecília had run, turned his eyes from that earth, which seemed to him a grave, toward the savage who had appeared, like a benevolent genie of the forests of Brazil.
