Happy in his little family

Read the full text in our reader

Dom Antônio had kept his oath as a loyal vassal; and, with a clear conscience for having done his duty, with the satisfaction that absolute command gives a man even in a desert, surrounded by companions he counted as friends, he lived happy in the bosom of his little family.

The setting

Dom Antônio had kept his oath as a loyal vassal; and, with a clear conscience for having done his duty, with the satisfaction absolute command gives a man even in a desert, surrounded by companions he counted as friends, he lived happy in the bosom of his little family.

A note on this passage

The long portrait ends on the word happy, and the peace feels earned — a good man, his duty done, secure among his own. Alencar sets this contentment down with deliberate fullness precisely because it is a height: everything the chapter has built stands complete here, at rest, an instant before the family that is its whole meaning steps into view.
