In 1578 he took part in Dr. Antônio de Salema's famous expedition against the French, who had established a trading post at Cabo Frio to carry on the smuggling of brazilwood.

The second date pins him to Salema's 1575–78 destruction of the French post at Cabo Frio, closing the book on France Antarctique. Note the source's estabeleoido: a printer's or scanner's slip for estabelecido that we keep exactly as the edition of record prints it, correcting only in the gloss.
