Em 1567 acompanhou Mem de Sá ao Rio de Janeiro, e depois da victoria alcançada pelos portuguezes, auxiliou o governador nos trabalhos da fundação da cidade e consolidação do domínio de Portugal nessa capitania,

Alencar anchors his fictional fidalgo to real history — Mem de Sá's 1567 expulsion of the French and the founding of Rio — so that the invented man inherits the documented one's credit. It is a novelist's forgery of pedigree, and a deliberate one: Dom Antônio must feel like a genuine cornerstone of the colony before the story pulls that colony's certainties apart.
