The setting

His service dated precisely. In 1567 he came with the governor Mem de Sá to Rio de Janeiro and, after the Portuguese victory, helped in the work of founding the city.

A note on this passage

Alencar anchors his fictional fidalgo to real history — Mem de Sá's 1567 expulsion of the French and the founding of Rio — so that the invented man inherits the documented one's credit. It is a novelist's forgery of pedigree, and a deliberate one: Dom Antônio must feel like a genuine cornerstone of the colony before the story pulls that colony's certainties apart.
