Thus, when death was drawing near, when it already breathed upon him and was about to touch him, he, heedless and pensive, turned over in his mind ideas of love, and fed on hopes. He did not think of dying; he had consciousness of himself and faith in God; but if by chance some doom should fall upon him, he was consoled by the idea that Cecília, offended, would forgive him a remnant of resentment she might perhaps still keep.
