Pela primeira vez na sua vida teve medo; teve medo por sua senhora, e sentiu não possuir mil vidas para sacrificá-las todas à sua salvação.
It was for this that he let out that word which betrayed his indignation; but at once he remembered that he could die, and that in that case Cecília would have no one to defend her. For the first time in his life he was afraid; he was afraid for his mistress, and felt sorry not to possess a thousand lives to sacrifice them all for her salvation.
