He resolved to say nothing to anyone whatever, not even to D. Antônio de Mariz: two reasons led him to act thus; the first was the fear of not being believed, for he had no proofs by which to justify the accusation an Indian was going to make against white men; the second was his confidence that he alone was enough to undo all the adventurers' plots and to fight the Italian.
