When Peri had cut some ten fathoms of the vine, which he wound about his neck, he sheathed the knife and turned to the squire smiling. Aires Gomes, without flinching, drew his sword and put himself on guard, according to the rules of the noble and liberal art of broadsword play, which he had practiced from his tenderest age.
