The setting

Cecília, however, unable to understand how a man could pass thus among so many venomous animals without being harmed by them, attributed the Indian's escape to a miracle, and regarded the simple, natural act he had just performed as an admirable heroism. Her joy at seeing Peri free of danger, and at holding in her hands Álvaro's keepsake, was such that she forgot all that had happened.
