— Não trato de vós, D. Diogo; a minha fortuna pertencevos como chefe da família que sereis; não trato de vossa mãe, porque perdendo um esposo restar-lhe-á um filho devotado: amo-vos a ambos, e vos bendirei na última hora. Há porém duas coisas que mais prezo neste mundo, duas coisas sagradas que devo zelar como um tesouro ainda mesmo depois que me partir desta vida. É a felicidade de minha filha, e a nobreza do meu nome; uma foi presente que recebi do céu, o outro legado que me deixou meu pai.
I do not deal with you, D. Diogo; my fortune belongs to you as head of the family you will be; I do not deal with your mother, for in losing a husband a devoted son will remain to her: I love you both, and will bless you at the last hour. But there are two things I most prize in this world, two sacred things I must guard like a treasure even after I depart this life. They are the happiness of my daughter, and the nobility of my name; the one was a gift I received from heaven, the other a legacy my father left me.
