— Tenho sessenta anos, continuou D. Antônio; estou velho. O contato deste solo virgem do Brasil, o ar paro destes desertos, remoçou-me durante os últimos anos; mas a natureza reassume os seus direitos; e sinto que o antigo vigor cede a lei da criação que manda voltar à terra aquilo que veio da terra.
"I am sixty years old," D. Antônio went on; "I am old. The touch of this virgin soil of Brazil, the pure air of these wilds, made me young again through these last years; but nature reclaims its rights; and I feel that the old vigor yields to the law of creation, which bids return to the earth that which came from the earth."
