No pequeno jardim da casa do Paquequer, uma linda moça se embalançava indolentemente numa rede de palha presa aos ramos de uma acácia silvestre, que estremecendo deixava cair algumas de suas flores miúdas e perfumadas.
In the small garden of the Paquequer house, a lovely girl was swaying idly in a straw hammock slung from the branches of a wild acacia, which, quivering, let fall some of its tiny, fragrant flowers.
Chapter V. The scene shifts from the jaguar hunt to the garden of the Paquequer house, where Cecília — 'the lovely girl' — is introduced.
Cecília enters exactly as the river did in Chapter I — first the setting, then the figure inside it. Alencar frames her among falling acacia flowers, a picture of gentleness set deliberately against the wilderness the hunt has just crossed.
