Chapter V. The banter turns to real worry — Peri has been gone two days — and Cecília, troubled, turns to her tame deer.
Isabel means to reassure, but her image — Peri as a creature of the forest, tireless and untouchable — is the very likeness the household keeps him in. The comfort and the condescension are the same sentence, and Cecília, who is beginning to see him otherwise, is not comforted.
