"Ah!..." exclaimed Cecília, blushing.
Chapter V. As evening closes, a clatter of hooves announces the return of the riders — Álvaro among them — and Cecília, at his name, blushes.
The blush is the chapter's quiet climax. At Álvaro's name Cecília colours — the same flush she dreamed earlier now real and involuntary — and the reader understands, before she does, that her nameless sadness had a name all along. Isabel loves Álvaro; Cecília blushes at him; the tragedy is set.
