— It is not your father who lowers you, sir knight, but the deed you did. I do not wish to shame you by taking the weapon I gave you to fight for your king; but since you do not yet know how to use it, I forbid you to draw it from its sheath, even to defend your own life.
It is not your father who lowers you, says D. Antônio, but the deed itself. He will not shame the boy by taking the sword he gave him to fight for his king; but since D. Diogo does not yet know how to use it, he forbids him to draw it — even to defend his own life.
The punishment is precisely fitted to the crime: a sword misused is a sword sheathed. It is severe, symbolic, and — the reader senses — dangerous, given the vengeance now loose in the forest.
