— Partireis brevemente, apenas chegar a expedição do Rio de Janeiro; e ireis pedir a Diogo Botelho que vos dê serviço nas descobertas. Sois português, e deveis guardar fidelidade ao vosso rei legítimo; mas combatereis como fidalgo e cristão em prol da religião, conquistando ao gentio esta terra que um dia voltará ao domínio de Portugal livre.
— You will leave soon, as soon as the expedition from Rio de Janeiro arrives; and you will go and ask Diogo Botelho to give you service in the discoveries. You are Portuguese, and must keep faith with your lawful king; but you will fight as a nobleman and a Christian for the faith, winning this land from the heathen for the dominion of a free Portugal one day.
D. Antônio sets the sentence: D. Diogo will leave soon, as soon as the expedition from Rio arrives, and go ask Diogo Botelho for service in the discoveries. He is Portuguese, and must keep faith with his lawful king — but he will fight as a nobleman and a Christian for the faith, winning this land from the heathen for a free Portugal one day restored.
The sentence is also a program: 1604 Brazil is under Spanish rule (the 'lawful king' D. Antônio still names is the Portuguese one). The old fidalgo dreams of a restored, free Portugal — a loyalty the novel will make into a private, hidden fatherland.
