«In spite of» es una locución fija: «a pesar de». Y «to keep off» — mantener a raya, protegerse de — es otro verbo con partícula. El contraste es pura Spyri: el sol de junio contra «the bitterest frost» (la helada más cruel), superlativo de «bitter» (amargo, crudo).
