«To look» aquí no es «mirar» sino «parecer, aparentar»: «she did not look more than five» = no aparentaba más de cinco. «If as much» — «si acaso tantos» — es un giro coloquial que rebaja aún más la cifra. Este mismo verbo «look» tendrá los dos sentidos a lo largo del libro.
