A note on this passage

The verse exists to fix a fact: the women saw where the body was laid. ἐθεώρουν is imperfect, a sustained watching, and it completes a chain Mark has been building, the same verb used of the women beholding the death from afar (15:40) and the rolled-back stone (16:4). In a world where a woman's testimony was legally discountable (Josephus, Ant. 4.219), the chain of custody for the empty tomb runs through their eyes, and Mary the Magdalene heads the pair that keeps it.
